Ducati introduces world's most powerful single-cylinder engine
In the midst of the electric vehicle boom, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati has taken a different route by introducing the world's most powerful single-cylinder engine, named the Superquadro Mono. This marks a significant return for Ducati of a single-cylinder engine to the Ducati range nearly after 30 years. Notably, the firm is set to debut this new engine on a new motorcycle described as "an essential, light, and nimble motorbike with racing DNA" during Ducati World Premiere 2024 event on November 2, 2023.
Ducati Superquadro Mono: Highlights and Specifications
The Superquadro Mono is a 659cc single-cylinder engine derived from the 1,285cc Superquadro engine found in the Panigale 1299. It shares the same piston and combustion chamber as the Panigale V2 and incorporates the Desmodromic system, including large titanium inlet valves, which is why it carries the Superquadro name. The cylinder barrel is constructed from aluminum, while the engine casing is made of magnesium.
The Superquadro Mono can produce an astonishing 77.5PS at 9,750rpm, which can be increased to 85PS with a racing exhaust at 9,500rpm. Impressively, the engine is capable of revving at 10,250rpm. The engine's torque output is rated at 63Nm at 8,050rpm, with 70% of it available at just 3,000rpm. Ducati also plans to offer a reduced-power version of this engine for A2 license holders. The engine's oil replacement interval is set at 15,000km (9,000 miles), and valve clearance checks are required every 30,000km (18,000 miles). It has a bore and stroke of 166mm and 62.4mm, respectively, with a compression ratio of 13.1:1. Mated to a six-speed gearbox with ratios derived from the Panigale V4, the new Ducati single-cylinder engine will also feature Ducati Quick Shift (up and down).
