Volkswagen MEB based all-electric Cupra el-Born unveiled, launch in 2021

The images that you see below are that of the Cupra el-Born all-electric hatchback, which will take production form in 2021. Who is Cupra? you ask. Formerly called SEAT Sport, this brand is responsible for high-performance cars for the Spanish automobile brand SEAT and was founded in 1985. Launched in 2018, Cupra's portfolio consists of a 310PS Formentor crossover, 245PS Leon plug-in hybrid, 310PS Leon Sportstourer and the 300PS Ateca SUV. Joining the portfolio will be the Cupra el-Born next year, an EV that draws its naming from one of the neighborhoods of Barcelona

The company had already showcased the el-Born Concept Car at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, attracting impressive reviews especially for the design. Cupra mentions that the designers continued to evolve the design from the concept to give it a sportier character with an even more striking visual appeal.

During the preview on the concept, Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, Director of Design at SEAT had stated, "el-Born is the ultimate translation of our emotional SEAT design language into the new world of electrical vehicles. Our Design Team has taken very seriously the challenge of making our first full electric vehicle attractive. I believe that driving electric cars has to be thrilling, has to be fun. We have to make customers fall in love with the idea of the electric car"

The features list in the el-Born include augmented reality head-up display and full connectivity.

Based on Volkswagen Group's MEB (Modular electric drive) platform, that also underpins the recently showcased Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron concept, upcoming Skoda Enyaq all-electric SUV and Volkswagen I.D. series, the Cupra el-Born's drivetrain consists of a 77kWh battery, driving the rear wheels, offering a claimed range of up to 500km. Equipped with fast charging capability, a 30minute charge can make the el-Born deliver a range of 260km. Along with the impressive range, Cupra also claims that the EV can touch 50kmph from standstill in 2.9seconds and 100kmph in 7.5 seconds.

The features list in the el-Born include augmented reality head-up display and full connectivity. The cabin will offer sports bucket seats, new steering wheel with Cupra mode buttons and high-quality, sustainably-sourced material choices throughout. The EV will be manufactured at the Zwickau plant in Germany.

Equipped with fast charging capability, a 30minute charge can make the el-Born deliver a range of 260km.
