Toyota Innova Crysta diesel temporarily discontinued

Toyota Kirloskar Motor India has announced it will temporarily stop taking orders for the diesel variant of the Toyota Innova Crysta. The company cites very high demand and a resultantly long waiting period as the major reason for this move.

Toyota Innova Crysta diesel bookings, specifications

Toyota says it will make efforts to deliver units of the Toyota Innova Crysta diesel to customers who have already booked the model, the Innova's petrol variant continues to remain unaffected. A 2.4-litre motor powers the diesel versions of the Innova Crysta that makes 150PS and 343 Nm with the five-speed manual or 360 Nm with the six-speed auto. The petrol motor is a 2.7-litre unit that makes 166PS and 245 Nm, pairing with the same gearbox combinations.

The diesel variant has been an especially popular one for the Innova Crysta, being the preferred choice for both private buyers and fleet operators, so this could lead to a significant decline in the popularity of the Innova Crysta during the period this variant is unavailable.

Toyota Innova Hybrid expected launch date India

However, strong rumours continue to swirl about Toyota India readying a new Innova hybrid for the Indian market. It is said that this Innova will be called the Hycross or wear the Zenix suffix and should debut by the end of 2022. This Innova hybrid will be unrelated to the Crysta and is expected to be based on the TNGA architecture, moving to a monocoque, FWD-based setup. More details are scarce but it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that this hybrid Innova will come with the powertrain from the Toyota Camry and Vellfire which pairs a 2.5-litre petrol with either one or two electric motors. In the Camry, this petrol engine puts out 178PS at 5,700rpm and 221 Nm at 3,600-5,200rpm. The electric motor is rated at 120PS and 202 Nm and is fed by a nickel-metal hydride battery. The system offers a combined output of 221PS.

While this is all conjecture, with the Innova Crysta diesel not in the picture momentarily Toyota India will have a strong prospective market for this upcoming Innova hybrid. The hybrid, though expected to be priced at a premium over the Crysta, should provide for similar or better lifetime running costs as the diesel Innova. This could lure buyers away from the unavailable diesel Innova, create a solid buyer base for the Innova hybrid and further bring hybrid tech into the mainstream, a process Toyota has already begun with the Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
