Tesla not to receive any exclusive incentives from the Centre; states may provide support
Tesla, the largest electric vehicle (EV) giant, is again in the talks with the Indian government officials to enter the Indian market. However, the Centre will not offer any exclusive incentives to the brand. The development has come after the representative of the Tesla recently met numerous government officials in Delhi, including the officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. While the Centre will not offer any special favour, the state governments have a consent to provide a special concession to the automaker.
Tesla's plans to enter IndiaAccording to news agency PTI, sources have stated that the central government is not considering any tailor-made incentives to the US-based electric vehicle manufacturer as of now. The sources also stated that Tesla is showing keen interest in the Indian market and plans to set up a complete supply chain. The Centre has already taken a stand against imports as it denied to lower import duties for the carmaker.
Sources told PTI, "The government is not looking at any tailored incentives as of now. States are a different matter. States might compete with each other and someone might give them (concession)." They added, "We have made it very clear that imports are not the preferred thing from our side. The company is talking big in terms of complete supply chain."
Earlier reports stated that Tesla is keen to build a production facility in India. In fact, Elon Musk has also reaffirmed it during an interview. If this plant comes up in the country, it might reduce dependency on its China factory. On top of that, Tesla operates various manufacturing facilities in the United States and Germany. It also constructing a new plant in Mexico.
Tesla line-upCurrently, Tesla sells the Model X, Model S, Model 3, and Model Y in international markets. The Model 3 and Model Y are the most popular and most-sought after EVs. It is also planning to introduce new products, such as all-new entry-level Model 2 and Cybertruck. For India, Tesla may initially launch the Model Y and Model 3.
