Tata Motors partners with Jayem Automotives for building performance vehicles

Tata Motors will soon be venturing into the performance segment in India. Tata Motors has collaborated with Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotives to build a new range of performance and special vehicles. The Tata Sports, displayed at the 2016 Auto Expo, will be the first product of this partnership.

Jayem Automotives have been long associated with Tata Motors, having developed performance kits for the Indica and the 230PS Nano, a special one-off project. The brand is also involved in Indian motorsport with the MRF Formula 1600, MRF Formula 2000 and Inde 2.0 racecars.

The Tata Sports will be the first performance hatchback from Tata Motors to take on the likes of Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and Fiat Punto Abarth. The Tata Sports is powered by a modified Revotron 1.2T petrol engine with a remapped ECU that makes 110PS between 5,300 to 5,50 rpm and generates 170Nm of torque between 3,000 to 3,800rpm. The standard Bolt makes 90PS at 5,000 rpm and generates 140Nm of torque between 1,500 to 4,000rpm. The motor in the Tata Sports comes mated with a five-speed manual transmission.

The Tata Sports gets a sporty body kit with air dam, scooped front and rear bumpers with air vents, chrome tipped exhaust pipes and 17-inch alloy wheels. The wheelbase is retained from the Tata Bolt, however, the Tata Sports is 25mm shorter and has a reduced ground clearance of 140mm. Inside, it gets race pedals, black leather seats with red detail and leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob.

Tata Motors will launch the Tata Sports by the end of 2016. Also, expect a similarly spruced up version of the Zest to arrive later. The Tata Motors Jayem Automotives association will also launch a range of performance and styling kits for other vehicles in the portfolio.
