Spec comparison: Mahindra Marazzo vs Renault Lodgy vs Tata Hexa vs Toyota Innova Crysta vs Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Mahindra has introduced its new MPV, the Marazzo in India at quite an interesting price point, starting at Rs 9.99 lakh. It slots in between the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Toyota Innova Crysta. Now, both the aforementioned MPVs top the charts, whether it is sales or popularity. The Mahindra Marazzo, when it comes to price, competes directly against the Renault Lodgy. In fact, the Mahindra Marazzo is slightly larger than the Lodgy when you consider dimensions. That said, the Marazzo is attempting to carve a niche in a segment that is growing rapidly. How does it stack up against the competition? Our spec comparison tells you just that.

All the MPVs here subscribe to the quintessential, cab-forward design. That said, they don't look drab or boring, at all. The Ertiga has been around for the longest time and is surely getting too long in the tooth. That said, the all-new Ertiga is just around the block and the only reason we've included it in this comparison is to give prospective buyers of the current Ertiga, an idea of how it stands in comparison. The new Ertiga will have slightly larger proportions and looks, unlike the current Ertiga. The Lodgy is the second MPV that has been around for a while. In the top-spec, Stepway edition trim, however, it looks butch. That's courtesy of the side cladding and faux skid plates. The Tata Hexa is another MPV that has a SUV inspired design. It's flared wheel arches and gigantic, 19-inch alloy wheels add to the road presence of the MPV. The Innova Crysta has grown in every dimension, compared to its predecessor and is almost as large as the Hexa. The Marazzo brings a fresh face to the segment, aided by generous splattering of chrome on the grille, door handles and the tailgate.

The Toyota and Tata are the largest, seven-seater MPVs in this comparison with the Hexa turning out to be marginally longer, wider and taller than the Crysta. The Marazzo is roughly 200mm shorter than the Hexa and Innova. That said, the Marazzo is a smidgen wider than the Innova. The Lodgy falls behind the Marazzo when it comes to size but the smallest MPV here is the Ertiga. The new Ertiga, according to our sources will be roughly 100 to 150mm bigger in length, width and height than the current Ertiga.

The Marazzo gets an all-new, 1.5- litre diesel motor that develops 130PS and 300Nm mated to a six-speed manual transmission. There's no automatic transmission option, for now. On our first drive, we were quite impressed with Mahindra's new drivetrain. The Hexa's engine makes the most power and torque here followed by the Innova Crysta's 2.4-litre engine. The Renault Lodgy uses the tried and tested, 110PS diesel motor that powers the Renault Duster. It is a proven engine that's refined and punchy, despite the 110PS figure suggesting otherwise. It does struggle under 2,000rpm, due to the pronounced turbo lag. However, once past that mark, the Lodgy feels quick. The Ertiga's 1.3-litre DDiS engine is another engine that wakes up past 2,000rpm. While 90PS may not sound a lot, in fact, the least among this group, it doesn't feel slow, because it weighs the least. In fact, its 0-100kmph time is nearly as quick as the Lodgy as well as the Crysta and Hexa. We are yet to test the Mahindra Marazzo to know how well it performs and how frugal the new engine really is. Watch out for a detailed road test as well as a comparison test.
