Production-spec Porsche Taycan EV spotted almost undisguised
The Porsche Taycan will be the brand's first EV and will form the basis for Porsche's electric offensive in the coming years. The four-door coupe is aimed squarely at the Tesla Model S but will provide for a dynamic experience befitting of its heritage. These pictures are some of the closest we have got so far to see the Taycan in its production form.
As expected, the Taycan bears close resemblance to the Mission E concept. It is based on VWs new MEB architecture, which will also underpin the upcoming Audi e-tron GT. The design is still unmistakably Porsche. So you get the simple shape with lots of curved surfaces but with sharper proportions. The front end is cleaner now, given that there are no air intakes, and the headlamps are thin LED strips in an oval housing. The silhouette is reminiscent of the Panamera but the car is more purposeful to look at. The wide-body look of the newest 911 is also replicated in this car, especially with its prominent rear haunches. The rear is characterised by slim LED lights, camouflaged here and with the now signature full-length LED light bar.
The Porsche Taycan will make use of two permanently activated synchronous motors, positioned on both the axles that will generate 600PS of power. Porsche claims that the Taycan will have a range of close to 500km as measured in accordance with the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Further, in terms of performance, the Porsche Taycan can reach 100kmph in less than 3.5s and 200kmph in less than 12 seconds.
The company has made its electric ambitions very clear. Porsche plans to invest more than six billion Euros in electromobility by 2022, doubling the investment that the company had originally planned. Of the additional three billion Euros, some 500 million Euros will be used for the development of Taycan variants and derivatives, around one billion Euros for electrification and hybridisation of the existing product range, several hundred million for the expansion of production sites, and around 700 million Euros for new technologies, charging infrastructure, and smart mobility.
