Nitin Gadkari: More than 2.78 lakh EVs registered in India in Jan-Mar 2023
In a written reply to Lok Sabha, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, recently said more than 2.78 lakh electric vehicles (EVs) have been registered in the country between January and March 2023 calendar year so far.
The state governments of Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are in the process of migrating the Vahan portal and hence their data on EV registration is partially included, while Telangana and Lakshadweep data is not available on the portal, Gadkari added in his written reply to Lok Sabha.
According to data on the Vahan portal, the registration of electric vehicles in India jumped to 10,20,679 in 2022 from a mere 3,29,808 in 2021, reporting almost a three-fold growth. If the upward trend of EV registrations from the first quarter of this year continues throughout the calendar year, India is expected to witness the highest-ever EV sales.
Tata Motors is the country's best-selling EV brand in the four-wheeler electric vehicle category. It sells the Tigor EV, Tiago EV, Nexon EV Prime, and Nexon EV Max. Furthermore, the MG ZS EV and Mahindra XUV400 are also in demand. The XUV400 has received over 15,000 bookings since its launch. Apart from that, the Kia EV6, Volvo XC40 Recharged, and Hyundai Ioniq 5 are also in high demand.
On the other hand, Ola, Ather, TVS, Bajaj Auto, and Hero Electric are among the top electric two-wheeler manufacturers in the country. New start-ups are also emerging as modern electric brands, such as Ultraviolette, River, Tork, Revolt Motors, Odysse, Simple Energy, and Vida.
