New Hyundai Kona Electric expected to hit Indian shores only in 2024

Hyundai is preparing to launch its next-generation Kona Electric, providing a preview of what's to come in 2024. The Korean automaker revealed powertrain and production data earlier this year, but we now have a few more. Hyundai is upgrading its second-generation Kona vehicle with an EV-inspired athletic look, increased interior space, and new safety and tech features.

New Hyundai Kona: Design and Dimensions

The Hyundai Seven concept served as design inspiration for the brand-new Kona. The new EV is 4,355mm in length which is 150mm longer than the previous Kona's, while it's 25mm wider and has a 60mm longer wheelbase. It has a clamshell bonnet, a thin wraparound front light bar, and robust off-road-inspired design elements. The design will differ based on the powertrain option.

The nose of the Kona Electric is more aerodynamic, with a smoother surface, and it retains the split headlight design, albeit the LED DRL is now full-width. Some components from the Ioniq 5 have been integrated into the side profile, however, the resemblance is minimal at best.

New Hyundai Kona: Powertrain and Range

Hyundai's upcoming small electric SUV will be available in two battery configurations. The typical 48.6 kWh variant offers 135PS and 255Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the bigger 64.8 kWh battery with 204PS and 255Nm torque has an estimated range of 418km. With 400V rapid charging, the Kona Electric can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 43 minutes.

New Hyundai Kona: Features and Interiors

The new i-PEDAL driving mode allows for one-pedal operation, while the Smart Regen system changes brakes automatically based on real-time data. Vehicle-to-load capability is now available, with a maximum power output of 1.7 kilowatts.

The Kona's 12.3-inch infotainment system, which is modelled after the Ioniq 5, extends towards the driver via a second 12.3-inch screen that serves as the instrument cluster. Keyless entry, an eight-speaker Bose Premium Sound System with a subwoofer, a powered tailgate and a heads-up display.

There's also a full suite of ADAS features, including Lane Keeping Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Driver Attention Warning, High Beam Assist, Forward Collision-avoidance Assist, and others, are just a few of the features available.

New Hyundai Kona: India

Hyundai quite obviously only offers the EV version of the Kona in the Indian market, which was launched in mid-2019. While the electric SUV received a mid-cycle facelift globally in 2020, the carmaker has still not introduced it in the country. We expect Hyundai to introduce the new generation Kona electric in India sometime next year.
