MSRDC to set up more CCTV cameras every 5kms on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Back in 2016, the 95km long stretch of the highway (Expressway) that connects Mumbai and Pune was upgraded with CCTV cameras for surveillance. However, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has acknowledged that the cameras installed near Talegaon and Khalapur Toll is not sufficient to monitor the entire stretch.

After a thorough examination, the MSRDC has made up its mind to install close to 100 CCTV cameras on either side of the Expressway which will be positioned almost five kilometres apart from each other. This will also give the authorities a way to closely monitor the isolated stretch of the Expressway for speed violations or to send medical help in case of an unfortunate mishap.

"We have decided to cover the entire Expressway through the medium of CCTV cameras so that all activities are tracked. This project will cost a total of Rs 40 crore where the cameras will be fitted at a distance of four to five kilometres each," said Dilip Ukirde, executive engineer, MSRDC.

Speaking about the same, Highway Superintendent Milind Mohit said, "A lot of measures are being taken to bring a cut in the number of accidents that are happening. There is also a drastic drop in the number of fatalities and these cameras will help us to continuously monitor the violators and warnings can be issued accordingly. This will also be a huge help to us and we can take action. The interceptor vehicles and CCTV cameras will make it easier to enforce the rules and the fine will be directly sent to the violators' homes."
