Mercedes-Benz G-class hits 5 lakh production mark

The Mercedes G-class, popularly known as the 'G-wagon' has been a massive success for the German marquee for quite a few years. The vehicle has a huge fan base owing to its unique combination of distinctive design, outstanding off-road capability and a luxurious cabin. The model has now hit its 5 lakh production mark and to commemorate this occasion, Mercedes has rolled out the 5th lakh unit with a retro flare from the 1986 model from its Graz, Austria production plant.

The model that Mercedes-Benz is presenting to commemorate the production anniversary is a one?off SUV. The car uses a shade of green known as 'Agave Green' which is one of the first paint colours available for the G-Class since its inception in 1979.

This special edition G uses a shade of orange for its turn signals from the 1970s automobiles but the car to date keeps the indicator position at the top of the bonnet. Some other touches from the 70s include a blacked-out front grille and a grille to protect the headlight units.

It also gets a set of retro 5-spoke, alloy wheels along with a spare wheel cover and a Mercedes-Benz badge at the back. It also features a roof rack that can be accessed from the ladder mounted to the right of the tailgate.

The interior of this special edition vehicle is also inspired by the 280 GE. The middle section of the seat is upholstered in the chequered fabric typical of the time, while the grab handle on the passenger side features the lettering "No. 500,000" in agave green.

This anniversary edition is based on the G500 sold internationally which features a twin-turbocharged V8 producing 422PS and 610 Nm of torque. Power is obviously sent to all 4-wheels via a  9-speed automatic gearbox.

In India, the G-class is offered in only the G350d and G 63 AMG. Both cars are priced at Rs 1.72 crore and 2.55 crore, respectively. Mercedes are also in the middle of electrifying the G-class with the EQG set to come out in the near future.
