Car sales December 2020: Tata Motors registers massive 84 per cent YoY growth
Tata Motors, the country's third-largest and largest homegrown brand, has sold 23,545 units of passenger vehicles in December 2020. This is a massive 84 per cent increase in wholesale numbers over December 2019. The brand has performed similarly well in Q3 FY21, garnering 68,803 units in sales versus 36,354 units in Q3 FY20.
The strong showing for Tata Motors has come from its new range of BSVI offerings led by the Tata Altroz. The significant updates to cars like the Harrier, Nexon, Tiago and Tigor have helped the carmaker claw back significant ground. The Nexon EV has been a notable success too, despite low absolute numbers. It is now the largest selling EV in the country.
The Tata Altroz is powered by the 1.2-litre Revotron 3-cylinder petrol, as seen on the Tiago, with 86PS at 6,000rpm and 113Nm at 3,300rpm. A diesel engine option is available elsewhere. This 1.5-litre Revotorq turbo-diesel 4-cylinder is a detuned version of the one found in the Nexon and makes 90PS at 4,000rpm and 200Nm at 1,250-3,000rpm. Both come paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Come January 13, a new turbo-petrol option is set to be added the Altroz range, to compete more closely with the Hyundai i20.
The Altroz is a premium sub-four-metre hatchback that competes with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz, Toyota Glanza, Volkswagen Polo and the new Hyundai i20. Prices for the Altroz start from Rs 5.44 lakh, ex-showroom Mumbai.
