AYUSH ministry takes delivery of Tata Tigor EVs

As part of its tender with government body Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), Tata Motors has now supplied the  Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) with the Tata Tigor EV. The first batch of these cars was handed over to P.N. Ranjit Kumar, the Admin joint secretary, Ministry of AYUSH by Raj Kumar Luthra, general manager at EESL.

This is part of the Rs 1,120 crore tender Tata Motors landed in 2017 to manufacture 10,000 units of the Tata Tigor Electric Vehicle (EV) for the government. The Tata Tigor electric cars are being manufactured at the Tata Motors plant in Sanand, Gujarat. Tata Motors pipped Mahindra & Mahindra as well as Nissan India to the tender. The large EV procurement was part of the government's then vision for an all-electric car market in India by 2030. Each of these Tigor EVs are being supplied at a cost of Rs 11.2 lakh.

Powering the Tigor EV is a 72V, 3-Phase AC induction motor. This makes about 41PS and 105Nm. Claimed performance figures are a 0-60kmph time of 12s and a top speed of 80kmph. The range is 213 km via a 21.5 kWh battery pack. However, the version supplied to the government is not this long-range version. The EESL spec cars are the commercial-only versions with 140 km range.

Tata Motors has now become India's largest EV maker, holding 62 per cent of the market in the first quarter of FY21. This has come on the back of the success of the Tata Nexon EV, which has sold over 1,000 units since its debut.
