2017 Volkswagen Tiguan: Features and variants explained
The Volkswagen Tiguan is an important SUV for the German car manufacturer on multiple grounds. It is the first offering that is based on the MQB platform. Secondly, it marks Volkswagen's debut in the popular Rs 25-30 lakh SUV space. Volkswagen launched the 2017 Tiguan in India at Rs 27.68 lakh for the Comfortline model. The more premium variant, Highline, is priced at Rs 31.04 lakh, all prices ex-Delhi. Should you settle for the lower variant or shell out more for the Highline trim? Here is our breakdown of both the variants.
The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan gets all-LED headlights with DRLS as standard on both Highline and Comfortline trims. However, the Comfortline misses on LED tail lights. It also doesn't feature panoramic sunroof with LEDs. Additionally, the Highline trim comes equipped with beefy looking 18-inch Kingston alloy wheels. The Comfortline, instead, gets black roof rails, smaller 17-inch wheels and chrome granite grey inserts on the bumpers. The titanium silver inserts, which add a premium touch in the Highline trim, are replaced by dark grid inserts in the Comfortline trim.
In terms of comfort, both the variants feature an identical list. The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is equipped with Vienna leather front and rear seats, three-zone air conditioning with rear controls, electrically adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats and leather-wrapped gear shift knob. The same remains the case when it comes to convenience except that the Comfortline trim misses on easy open boot and keyless entry with push-button start. Both the trims come with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto connectivity options as standard. The touchscreen infotainment system is paired with an 8-speaker layout.
Volkswagen India has also made almost all safety features as standard on both Comfortline and Highline trims. The only two features that the Comfortline misses on are self-sealing tyres and reverse parking camera. However, features like active hood for pedestrian safety, six airbags, ABS, ESC and tyre pressure monitoring system are offered as standard.
We have already driven the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan and believe that it will appeal only to those who want a premium yet distinct SUV which, at the same time, is more practical than the other luxury cars it competes with. It is admittedly quite expensive but at the same time is a well-designed package which offers luxury, safety and decent practicality.
