Volkswagen India begins deliveries of the Ameo petrol
Deliveries of Volkswagen's first compact sedan, the Ameo, have begun recently. Bookings for the car had begun in May 12, 2016. The car was subsequently launched in India on June 6, 2016 at Rs 5.14 lakh, ex-Mumbai for the base Trendline trim. Currently, the Volkswagen Ameo is available only in a petrol variant, while the diesel variant is expected to be launched in India during the Diwali season. The Ameo petrol's Comfortline and Highline trims are priced at Rs 5.88 lakh and Rs 6.92 lakh (ex-Mumbai), respectively.
The Volkswagen Ameo petrol gets a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual transmission. This engine puts out 75PS of power and 110Nm of torque, and is claimed to offer a fuel efficiency figure of 17.83kmpl. However, when we tested the car it returned an overall efficiency of 15.5kmpl. The Volkswagen Ameo's diesel variant will come with the updated 1.5-litre engine, which will soon be launched in the Volkswagen Polo diesel. This engine will produce 107PS of power instead of the 90PS it makes now. The Ameo diesel will also be offered with the proven 7-speed DSG gearbox even in the lower trims.
The Ameo is the first car in this segment to get dual airbags and ABS as standard across the range. Other segment first features in the Ameo (although available in the Highline trim) include cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, anti-pinch windows and cornering lamps. But is that enough to beat its rivals like Hyundai Xcent, Ford Figo Aspire, Tata Zest, Honda Amaze and Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire? Read our detailed comparison to find out.
Although a late entry from Volkswagen into this segment, the Ameo, according to Michael Mayer, is a car that is "made in India and made for India." He also stated that Volkswagen has "introduced special care packages to ensure a positive ownership experience."
