Volkswagen has refreshed the third-generation Touareg five years after its introduction. The Touareg was Volkswagen's first SUV in 2002, and it has since opened the way for various SUVs and crossovers catering to multiple markets. The redesigned Touareg, a sibling vehicle to the Audi Q7, features exterior design enhancements and a remodelled interior with additional digital capabilities across the Elegance and R-Line trims.

A variety of changes have been made to the front and back designs. In terms of appearance, the radiator grille, headlights, and front apron have been updated. There are also four new wheel designs: Coventry and Braga, which are 19- and 20-inch wheels, respectively, and Napoli and Leeds, which are 21-inch wheels.

The rear design has also been made more angular. A continuous horizontal LED strip and the red-illuminated Volkswagen insignia now adorn the taillight clusters.

Volkswagen has revealed five drivetrain options for the new Touareg, all of which include an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system with 4Motion. A turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with 340PS is included, as are two turbocharged 3.0-litre diesel V6 engines with 230PS and 285PS.

Volkswagen has also improved its current two plug-in hybrid powertrains, which deliver 380PS in the Touareg eHybrid and 462PS in the Touareg R eHybrid when coupled with the turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine and a gearbox-mounted electric motor. The latter has a 0-100kph acceleration time of 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 250 kmph. Although Volkswagen has yet to confirm their electric-only ranges, both PHEV versions employ a battery with a capacity of 14.1kWh.

The Innovision Cockpit, which was previously optional, is now standard on the facelifted Touareg. A 12-inch instrument cluster and a 15-inch infotainment display are included. Software and functionality updates include more powerful HD map data with lane-level sat-nav and a new voice control system based on conversational requests. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available. The new Touareg's quality has also been upgraded. The centre console trimmings, for example, are now softer than previously.

VW has also stated that they have sold over 1.3 million units of the Touareg since its inception in 2002. While the first generation of the popular SUV was offered in India but we don't expect the new generation car to come to India anytime soon.
