Upcoming Mahindra Thar 4x2 variant powertrain details leaked
The engine and power output details of the new Mahindra Thar 4x2 variant have been leaked on the internet. The leaked document suggests that the entry-level 2WD variant will not carry forward the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel motor but a new 1.5-litre diesel unit instead.
Going by the leaked document, the Thar 4x2 two-wheel drive will be powered by a smaller displacement 1,497cc, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel unit making 118PS at 3,500rpm and 300Nm of torque between 1,750 and 2,500rpm. This motor will be coupled to a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 2.2-litre mHawk produces 130PS and 300Nm of torque.
Furthermore, the 4x2 version of the SUV will continue to be powered by the same 2.0-litre, inline-four, turbocharged mStallion petrol engine that makes 152PS and 300Nm of torque (320Nm with AT).
The new smaller capacity 1.5-litre engine and the two-wheel drive setup, along with a tax benefit for being under four metres in length, are likely to bring down the cost of the Thar significantly. With this, the new entry-level variant could become cheaper by Rs 2-3 lakh compared to the current model. However, it is hard to say whether Mahindra will only offer the new engine and 2WD options in the form of entry-level variants.
