Toyota Kirloskar Motor is set to have a busy 2022 with two significant product launches. The first of these is the Toyota Hilux lifestyle pick-up set for a January 20 launch, but the more significant one is that of the mid-sized SUV set for later in 2022. The Glaza and Urban Cruiser are also set to get significant mid-life updates, following their respective Maruti Suzuki counterparts and are part of six new launches planned by Toyota India over the next two years.

Toyota D22 midsized SUV

The new mid-sized SUV is codenamed the D22 and is expected to be manufactured by Toyota at its Bidadi plant. Unlike the earlier vehicles coming out of this alliance, this SUV's development will be led by Toyota who will supply a reworked version to Maruti Suzuki. The new SUV will likely be based on the low-cost version of Toyota's global vehicle architecture developed by subsidiary Daihatsu and termed the Daihatsu New Global Architecture(DNGA).

The Toyota D22 SUV will also likely set itself apart from the rest of its competition with the powertrains it offers. While a 1.0-litre three-cylinder tubo-petrol from the Toyota Raize with its 95PS could be the base engine option, the top-spec version may offer a hybrid powertrain. This could pair an electric motor with either a 1.5-litre or a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol for outputs of up to 195PS with the larger engine, these hybrid versions may even come with AWD. The interiors could also be up to speed with the latest that Toyota offers globally with a large 10.5-inch digital and distal instrumentation as well as tech features like wireless phone pairing, connected car tech and so on.

Six new models from Toyota in two years, 560B MPV

Toyota looks to be taking a page out of Hyundai-Kia's strategy for India, with a seven-seater MPV codenamed 560B set to follow in 2023 and also likely to be based on the DNGA architecture. This could be a global model reworked for India considering Daihatsu is known to be developing an MPV based on this architecture. It should share the same powertains and get a largely similar feature set as the SUV and be posited against the likes the Kia Carens. As for the other four models, these should be rebadged versions of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Ertiga, which have already launched in there markets along with the updated Glanza and Urban Cruiser.
