Toyota begins testing electric Hilux pickup for 2025 Thailand production
Toyota has commenced testing its new electric vehicle (EV) Hilux pickup truck to ensure it performs well in various conditions, reports Reuters. Notably, the carmaker is gearing up for production in Thailand by the end of 2025.
The electric Hilux, based on the upcoming next-generation Hilux expected in 2025, will retain the signature Hilux's design language, such as bold stance, imposing front fascia, rugged side cladding, and a commanding on-road presence with some unique elements that makes it stand out as an EV. Inside, the pickup is expected to keep the familiar styling with a sizable touchscreen infotainment system and an all-digital instrument cluster.
Although the powertrain specifications are scarce, we can expect a sizeable battery pack likely ranging from 60kWh to 80kWh, offering a driving range of up to 300-350km. It could support DC charging up to 150kW and AC charging up to 11kW. Given it is an off-roader, Toyota might offer it with V2V and V2L capabilities.
Thailand was strategically chosen for the initial rollout due to the strong demand for electric pickups in the Southeast Asia market. The electric Hilux will be built there first before potentially reaching other parts of the world.
"Our goal is to produce the Hilux BEV here," said Pras Ganesh, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Asia, referring to the battery-electric vehicle, during the Future Mobility Asia summit. "The Thai domestic market will be our primary focus, but we're also considering exporting the Hilux BEV in the future," he added.
Testing the Hilux BEV in various roads and temperature conditions is crucial for Toyota. As Ganesh acknowledges, "The bigger the battery needed for increased range, the heavier the vehicle becomes, which can significantly reduce cargo capacity. Finding the right balance to meet customer needs is our top priority."
While Toyota expects strong growth in hybrid sales for Thailand and other Southeast Asia countries, the electric Hilux marks a significant step towards a more diversified and electrified future for the region. This strategic move will probably help Toyota stay competitive against cost-conscious rivals like Great Wall Motor in the burgeoning electric pickup truck segment.
