Tata Motors' commercial vehicle unit bags order for 5,000 buses from STUs in India
Tata Motors' Commercial Vehicle unit has just announced that it received bookings for over 5,000 buses from 25 state and city transport departments. According to Tata, this is an 80 per cent increase in orders compared to last year. This sudden surge in orders from STUs (State Transport Undertakings) comes after four years according to the brand, and indicates the government's increase in focus towards improving public transport in India.
With the entire country becoming more conscious of the increasing pollution levels, this move is a good sign especially considering the number of old buses the STUs run across the length and breadth of India. Additionally, the new buses will also have passed higher safety standards. According to Tata Motors, some of the orders require the buses to be "fully IT enabled" and will feature public information systems, CCTV cameras, WiFi and on-board diagnostics.
Tata says that it has already developed hybrid and articulated buses which will also be seen on Indian roads soon. According to Sandeep Kumar, the business head of Tata Motors' Commercial Vehicle Passenger department, early investments from the government in transportation technologies, allows the brand to play a big role in offering fully integrated solutions to one of the largest bus markets in the world India. Despite nearly doubling their order book this year, Kumar says that the brand is adequately ready to cater to current and future demand.
