The first crash test results from the Indian government's Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) have been released, with both the Tata Harrier and Safari receiving five stars. Previously, both models were the highest-rated SUVs in the GNCAP safety testing. The flagship Tata SUVs have now been granted five-star ratings under India's new and independent safety performance evaluation criteria.

The Harrier and Safari facelifts are built on the OMEGARC architecture, which was developed from the D8 platform used by Land Rover. The SUV has seven airbags, ESC, ABS with EBD, VSM, HAC, HSC, hill hold control, three-point seatbelts, ISOFIX mounts, seatbelt retractor and pretensioners, a 360-degree surround camera, a blind-spot monitor, and Level 2 ADAS technology.

The Tata Safari costs between Rs 16.19 lakh and Rs 27.34 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Tata Harrier costs between Rs 15.49 lakh and Rs 26.44 lakh (ex-showroom).

Both SUVs have the same Kryotec 2.0-litre diesel engine, which produces 170PS and 350Nm of peak torque. The engine may be combined with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Announcing this distinctive achievement, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari ji, said, "Bharat-NCAP is India's independent, atmanirbhar voice on vehicle safety. It is benchmarked to the best-in-class global standards and the Bharat-NCAP vehicle rating system is designed to advance road safety and vehicle safety standards beyond mandatory regulations. I'm delighted that the first ever vehicles being certified today with the highest achievable 5-star rating, are both from Tata Motors. I congratulate them on award of this coveted certification with the highest possible ratings and for continuing to enrich their legacy of introducing the safest vehicles on Indian roads."
