Mini John Cooper Works Clubman with 231PS and 350Nm revealed

Mini has just revealed the latest car from its performance division, the John Cooper Works Clubman. It is powered by the same 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine in the other JCW models, and produces 231PS of power (39PS over the stock Cooper S engine) from 5,000-6,000rpm. And with 350Nm available on tap, this is the torquiest Mini to ever roll out of the factory!

To squeeze out all that power, the folks at Mini have had to modify the twin scroll turbocharger, add a larger intercooler, fit a sports exhaust and lower the compressing ratio. They've also improved the cooling system by adding a second radiator, which is located under the left wheel arch. However, it gets the same six-speed manual and 8-speed automatic options from the standard version. But that's not a bad thing at all.

The JCW Clubman has also got Mini's ALL4 all-wheel drive system which helps put all that power down. This system sends power to the front wheels for most of the time. However, when it detects a loss in traction, adequate power is transferred to the rear wheels via an eltro-hydraulic clutch. The brand claims that it'll do 0-100kmph in a quick 6.3 seconds, with a top speed of 238kmph. At the same time, it says the John Cooper Works Clubman is also capable of returning an overall efficiency figure of 14.69kmpl.

Mini has also improved the braking system to help control all the added power. It gets a four-piston calliper setup which was developed along with Brembo. The car has been lowered by 10mm and the suspension has been stiffened. The JCW Clubman is also offered with the optional Variable Damper Control which offers three modes – Sport, MID and Green. Apart from changing suspension behaviour, these modes also adjust the characteristics of the engine and the 8-speed automatic.

The easiest way to identify one is by the more aggressively styled bumpers and the sporty five-spoke 18-inch wheels. There are of course, John Cooper Works badges located on the grille, fenders and on the rear door. The new front bumper houses air inlets instead of the parking and fog lamps, which direct air towards the brake cooling ducts and the second radiator. Mini also claims that the side sills, roof spoiler and rear apron reduce aerodynamic lift. The biggest change to the interior meanwhile, is the use of sports seats for the driver and passenger.

The Mini John Cooper Works Clubman is currently available in the UK at £29,345 pounds (Rs 25.5 lakh) for the 6-speed manual and £30,945 (Rs 26.9 lakh) for the 8-speed automatic. Unfortunately, it could be a while before we see it go on sale in India.
