Mercedes-Benz and Geely owned subsidy, Smart unveil the 'Smart #1' as their all new electric SUV

Mercedes Benz and Geely owned subsidy, Smart is expanding its portfolio by launching their all-new electric SUV called the 'Smart #1'. Previewed as a concept at last year's Munich Auto Show, this is Smart's first-ever venture in the SUV segment and it's safe to say it's quite a compelling one.

The Smart #1 measures 4279mm in length. The SUV bears a strong similarity to other Mercedes-Benz SUVs, with the headlights and taillights, in particular, resembling the Mercedes GLB in form and appearance. It sports 19-inch wheels with aero-blades that decrease the drag coefficient and improve the car's economy.

Rather than being built on a Mercedes platform, the Smart #1 is built on Geely's SEA electric architecture. It includes a 66-kWh battery pack and a single electric motor producing 272PS, 343 Nm of torque driving the rear wheels. On the European WLTP cycle, the Smart #1 has a maximum range of 273 miles/440km and can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in under 30 minutes using a DC fast charger, according to Smart.

A 9.2-inch screen in front of the driver is supplemented by a 10-inch head-up display, and a freestanding 12.8-inch touchscreen in the middle of the dash employs a revolutionary infotainment system with AI-based voice capabilities. The rear bench seat moves and reclines, and the cargo space in the Smart#1 appears to be fairly decent. Over-the-air upgrades, phone-as-key functionality, and a number of driver-support features like as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist will all be included in the car.

The Smart #1 will be produced in China as part of a joint venture between Smart and Geely, and it will be available in Europe by the end of 2022. 1,000 Launch Edition Smart #1 will be built, with gold accents on the exterior trim and dashboard, as well as a checkerboard design on the three-spoke wheels, seats, and panoramic sunroof.
