McLaren P1 engine and power specs out
Just days before its official unveiling in production form at the Geneva Auto Show 2013, McLaren has released data about its P1 hyper car. The P1 is a hybrid car, powered by a 916PS 900Nm 3.8-litre V8 twin-turbo engine coupled to an electric motor. The company says that this car has a special engine casing to accommodate the electric motor and there are tweaks done to improve engine cooling as well. Due to this, the P1 has a special boost system which delivers instant power â" 179PS, which is what the electric motor generates. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a dual-clutch 7-speed gearbox.
McLaren also says that adding the electric motor has other benefits apart from the ones like lower emissions. They claim that the e-motor provides for faster shifts with instant negative torque being supplied at the point of shift, enabling the engine to drop revs quickly. In electric only mode, the P1 can travel 10km. From their F1 roots, McLaren have incorporated certain features like the DRS button on the steering wheel which reduces the drag by as much as 23 per cent, thereby enhancing the drive experience.
