Maruti Suzuki Baleno reaches 8 lakh sales milestone in 5 years
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is now the latest car from India's largest carmaker to achieve another sales milestone. The Baleno premium hatchback has now sold over eight lakh units. It also celebrates five years of being on sale having launched in 2015.
The Baleno crossed the 1 lakh sales mark in just a year after its launch in 2016. Sales have steadily risen since then. The hatchback crossed five lakh sales in 2018, and needed only two years after that to add three lakh more cars on the road. Notable milestones along the way have been the introduction of the CVT gearbox to the top Alpha trim in 2017 and the new Smart Hybrid mild-hybrid tech was also introduced with the BSVI switchover in 2019. The Baleno also received a mild facelift in 2018 which brought with its new bumpers, grille, alloy wheels and the Smartplay Studio infotainment.
The Baleno is currently available with a 1.2-litre K12B petrol engine that puts out 83PS and 113 Nm. A different 1.2-litre Dualjet motor makes 90PS and 113 Nm. Both engines pair with a five-speed manual while a CVT is on offer with the less powerful motor. Through its run, the Baleno has also been available with the 1.3-litre Multijet diesel in its 75PS and 190Nm tune. Further, a performance-oriented Baleno RS was also offered. This came powered by a 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol with 102PS/150Nm, rear disc brakes and more aggressive bumpers. Both the diesel and the RS were not updated to BSVI norms and discontinued after the switchover.
Sold via the Nexa sales channel, prices for the Baleno currently start from Rs 5.7 lakh for the Sigma and go up to Rs 9.03 lakh for the Alpha CVT, all prices are ex-showroom Mumbai. The Baleno competes with the Tata Altroz, Honda Jazz and the upcoming Hyundai i20.
