Mahindra to launch 1.9 litre diesel versions of the Scorpio and the XUV500 in India soon
Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) is expected to shortly launch the downsized version of the 2.2litre mHawk diesel engine in the Scorpio and XUV500. This move comes as a counter against the Supreme Court's ban on registration of diesel SUVs and cars with a capacity of 2000cc and above in the Delhi NCR region. The new engine is a 1.9 litre version of the mHawk engine and despite the downsizing, it is expected that power and torque will remain the same.
The engine has been developed in-house by M&M but the engine mapping has been outsourced. Currently the 1.9 litre mHawk Scorpio prototype is said to be have been already approved by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and is cited to reach dealerships in the coming weeks. The Mahindra XUV500 with the same 1.9-litre motor is currently undergoing the certification process. While the diesel ban may be applicable in New Delhi at the moment, Mahindra is likely to launch the Scorpio and XUV500 with the downsized engines across the nation.
The new engine has been developed almost immediately after the SC ban. Usually downsizing an engine takes almost a year or two, say industry sources.
The development of the 1.9 litre mHawk engine is cited to be as a defence, incase a similar ban is announced in other major cities as well. As M&M executive director Pawan Goenka had said,"We are certainly prepared for all eventualities. We are coming up with a petrol line-up, which will be made available over a period of time. This will be our defence over something like this."
The 1.9-litre mHawk engine will join the company portfolio of below 2000cc diesel engines along with the 1.5 litre engine of the TUV300 and the 1.2 litre mFalcon engines of the new KUV100. We expect Mahindra to make an announcement soon.
