Mahindra launches refreshed Thar CRDe in India at Rs 8.03 lakh
Mahindra has just launched the refreshed Thar CRDe at Rs 8.03 lakh, ex-showroom Nashik. The updates feature some exterior changes as well as comprehensive changes to the interiors. Clear lens headlamps, tough plastic bumpers, new wheel arch extensions and a redesigned, removable canopy make for the changes on the outside. The insides get a big makeover and while still simple, they feel a lot more welcoming. The beige and black plastic theme is lifted from the new Bolero.
The updated Thar CRDe features well thought out amenities like a 12V socket, lockable glove box, cup holders and an attractive new three pod instrument cluster. The seats are new as well and so are the gear knob and steering wheel. Quality in some areas still needs improvement like the door handles and lock knobs but overall, it is a huge leap ahead from the ultra spartan insides of the old Thar.
The engine remains the same 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel unit that makes 106PS and 247Nm. An important addition to the new Thar is something that enthusiasts have been craving for a long time - a locking differential. This system works mechanically and locks the differential automatically when it senses more than 10 per cent differential in wheel speeds which helps generate more traction to get out of extra sticky situations.
This update does not apply to the Thar Di that runs a more basic engine and chassis set-up. The Di is more utilitarian in nature and Mahindra says that it doesn't demand the same updates.
At Rs 8.03 lakh, the Thar comes with a small price increment. However, it is now a considerably more polished package while still remaining terrifically capable off the beaten path.
