Maruti Suzuki is set to unveil the third generation of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR for the Indian market. The hatchback is now much larger and sits on new lighter Heartect underpinnings borrowed from its stablemates. It now also gets a larger motor as an option and improved safety tech as standard. The WagonR sits below the Celerio in the company's line-up and competes with other such hatchbacks like the Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago.

The Big New WagonR is stronger and safer by way of the Heartect platform is now sits on. Also, it gets seven color options.

The WagonR buyers have so far been families and first time car buyers. This generation will also target youngsters.

The base trim is the LXi available only with the 1.0 litre motor, above this sits the VXi trim. The VXi cars will be available with both the 1.0 litre and 1.2 litre. Further, buyers can specify the AMT gearbox for both engines. The ZXi variant is only available with the 1.2 litre motor, a manual or AMT gearbox can be chosen.
There will be seven variants: LXi 1.0L, VXi 1.0L, VXi AGS 1.0L, VXi 1.2L, VXi AGS 1.2L, ZXi 1.2L and ZXi AGS 1.2L.
The interior gets a new Smart play Studio infotainment screen, steering mounted controls and an AMT option.
There are two engines on offer now. The K10B 1.0 litre motor carries on unchanged with its 68PS and 90Nm. Joining it in the line-up is the 1.2 litre petrol motor from the Swift and Baleno. This makes 83PS and 113Nm. Both units will be mated to a five-speed manual or an AMT.
It is upto 65 kgs lighter than before. The base LXi weighs a measly 805 kgs while the top-spec ZXi AGS is only 40 kgs more at 845 kgs
The Wagon R is now based on the Heartect platform. It shares this structure with other Maruti cars like the Swift, Ignis and Baleno
