Honda has unveiled its new range of hybrid systems which could give rivals like Ford and Toyota some competition. A technologically advanced petrol-electric arrangement called Honda Sport Hybrid made up of three different systems namely Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive (IDCD), Intelligent Multi Mode Drive/Plug-In (IMMD) and Super Handling â€" All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) will be replacing the age-old IMA series. The company is saying that these three different systems will be used as standalones on vehicles depending on their size and usage.

A seven-speed dual-clutch box will be used in IDCD equipped cars but the main focus will be on bumping up the fuel efficiency, with Honda claiming that this system will help the car cover 30 per cent more ground when mated to a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle engine, compared to single motor hybrid systems. It is most likely to be used in smaller cars like the CR-Z and Fit.

IMMD consists of a hybrid engine and an electronic CVT which has twin electric motors which are built in and will be on offer with and with-out plug-in facility. Depending on the conditions, the driver will be able to select different drive modes. In electric mode, needless to say, the electric motors provide for all the propelling power while hybrid mode makes use of the engine to make electricity for the motors. In high performance mode, the Engine drive will be activated wherein both the electric and petrol engines will be used simultaneously to create power.

SH-AWD has three electric motors and will have a 3.5-litre direct injected V6 mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. A single motor will power the front wheels while each of the rear wheels will have a different motor. For optimum handling and torque distribution, the rear motors work independent of each other. Honda claims that this system will deliver the fuel efficiency of a 4-cylinder motor and at the same time give performance equivalent to a V8.
