Honda Car India developing mid-sized SUV to take on Creta, Kushaq
Gaku Nakashini, head of Honda Car India has confirmed that the Japanese carmaker is developing a new mid-sized SUV. This comes after years of speculation surrounding Honda's strategy for this segment. The new Honda SUV will be aimed at the rapidly growing mid-sized SUV segment that has seen the Skoda Kushaq launch recently, and will see the hotly anticipated Volkwagen Taigun and Mahindra XUV700 soon.
Details are scarce at this stage other than the fact that the new Honda SUV is codenamed the 31XA and that it is being built on a completely new architecture not shared with the likes of the Honda City and Amaze. The company is aimed for production to begin sometime in 2023, with a launch soon after.
But with the way this segment is playing out, we can expect the Honda SUV to come with a wide choice of engines, petrols and even diesel, a typically Honda interior with good space and a long list of features, many of them not seen previously on Honda cars in India. The styling should mimic that of the new HR-V that was launched globally earlier this year with a cleaner, more sculpted look. Also expect to see a significantly more minimalistic, better-textured cabin.
It was earlier speculated that the Honda N7X would be Honda's SUV contender in India, but with this development, it is unclear if the seven-seater is under consideration for India. On a side note, the company also stated that the Honda City hybrid, originally planned for a launch this year will come in 2022 due to delays caused by the COVID19 pandemic.
