Global NCAP has revealed its most recent batch of crash test findings, which include cars like the Kia Carens and Honda Amaze. The Honda Amaze scored 2 stars for adult occupants and 0 stars for child occupant protection, while the Carens scored 3 stars in adult safety and 5 stars for child occupants.

Honda Amaze

In 2019, the made-in-India Amaze marketed in South Africa was assessed under the older Global NCAP criteria and received four stars for adult and one star for child occupant protection. In the examination of adult safety protection, the Honda Amaze received a score of 27.85 out of 34.00, earning a 2-star grade.

Both the driver's and passengers' heads and necks were well protected. Both occupants' chests were adequately protected, while knee protection was quite minor. However, the driver and passenger's tibias were well protected. The footwell section was declared stable, and the bodyshell proved the potential to bear further loads.

Honda Cars India Limited has given a statement regarding this Global NCAP rating. "The South Africa spec 2nd Generation Amaze has already been tested as 4 star by GNCAP in 2019. The latest test basis new protocol shows that the total score is of 5-star level. However, mainly due to requirement of certain equipment like Electronic Stability Control and Side Curtain Airbags, it resulted in lower rating."

The child protection revealed head contact in the frontal impact for both dummies, significant loadings in the chest and neck of the three-year-old kid, and an ejection risk in the 1.5-year-old dummies.

While side impact protection was adequate, the lack of 3-point belts in all sitting locations as standard and the failure of CRS installation in the rear centre position led to the poor 0-star rating for child occupant safety.

"At Honda, our unwavering commitment to safety is evident in the meticulous engineering of our products, integrating advanced active and passive safety technologies across our entire model range. We are dedicated to continuously work to enhance our vehicles on all parameters of Safety and improve them further at model change timing," Honda stated.

Kia Carens

According to the newest procedure, the Kia Carens received a three-star rating in the Global NCAP crash test. The Carens was tested twice under the new methodology, with the first test yielding zero stars. This test revealed that the neck was subjected to severe impact, prompting Kia to improve the restraint systems before retesting, resulting in a three-star grade.

The Carens produced between May 2, 2023, and December 11, 2023, was the car that scored 0 adult occupancy protection. The road safety organization highlighted that Carens manufactured after December 11, 2023, showed a significant improvement in AOP, earning a three-star grade and a score of 22.07 out of 34.

Surprisingly, during frontal crashes, the child seats for both the 3-year-old and the 18-month-old were rearward-facing, using i-size anchorages and support legs to provide full protection and avoid head exposure. In terms of child safety protection, the Kia Carens performed brilliantly, with a score of 41.11 out of 49.00 and a 5-star safety rating.

All Carens models come standard with six airbags, ESC, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, rear disc brakes, three-point seat belts for all seats, and ISOFIX anchors.
