GM sets up Chinas biggest proving ground
Shanghai General Motors, SAIC, General Motors and Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) have opened China's largest proving ground. Boasting of a 59.2km road which boasts of mimicking more than 60 different kinds of driving conditions, 2.5 lakh sqft of repair and engineering area and an investment of more than $250 million, these grounds will be used to expand the General's various other brands in China. With an annual testing capacity boasting of 20 million kilometres every year, the critical aspects like development, evaluation, quality control and certification for the GM-SAIC alliance will be done here. Shanghai GM and PATAC will be looking after the facility's operations.
"GM has brought some of our industry's most advanced technology and processes to the Guangde proving ground," said Kevin Wale, president, GM China, and chief country operations officer, China, India and ASEAN.
