General Motors is developing a new pedestrian safety technology which will use Wi-Fi Direct and detect a pedestrian/construction worker/bicycle user using the phone on the road and alert the driver accordingly. Wireless pedestrian detection is part of GM's ongoing development of vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems that could provide advance warning about hazards such as slowed or stalled vehicles, slippery roads or intersections and stop signs.

Wi-Fi Direct connects to a device within a second rather than the seven to eight seconds that other conventional wireless systems require. GM claims that two Wi-Fi Direct devices will reach other within a maximum distance of 656ft and in addition to pedestrian detection, will also help secure transfer of files between a home computer and navigation system.
