The 4 Series will be made available with three engine options at first, a 183PS four-cylinder turbodiesel for the 420d, a 245PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol for the 428i and a 306PS 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol for the 435i. Three more engines will be added to this line up in the future, a 183PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol for the 420i, a 257PS 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel for the 430d and a 313PS 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel for the 435d.

The 435d will get BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission. xDrive will later on make it to the 420d and 420i models as an option. Other models will be rear-wheel-drives. The 430d also gets an 8-speed automatic like the 435d. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard on all other models. These models have an option of the 8-speed automatic transmission. The variants offered will be SE, Sport, Modern, Luxury and ?M Sport.

When compared to the 3 Series, the 4 Coupe is longer, while the 2809mm wheelbase remains the same. It is 15.2mm wider, and comes with a roofline which is 68.5mm closer to the ground. The sporty planted look comes from the combination of the design language from the 3 Series with a silhouette that's similar to the elder sibling, the 6 Series.

The inside remains very similar to the 3 Series, only with steeper screen angles and race-positioned seating. Heated leather seats, a 6.5" touchscreen with BMW's iDrive, sport seats and 18" alloys (except SE) come as standard fitments.
