Ford India's re-entry edges closer as Mustang Mach-E gets trademarked

Ford is expected to return to India in 2025 with the new-gen Endeavour. We reported in January that the American brand had filed a design patent for the Endeavour in India. Now, Ford has trademarked the Mustang Mach-E for India hinting that the brand might take an EV approach towards its re-entry.

Ford India

Ford had actually revealed plans to deliver the Mustang Mach-E to India before ceasing local operations. The brand has two production plants in India: one in Sanand, Gujarat, and another in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The former was purchased by Tata Motors last year, while the latter was subject to a lengthy bidding procedure. Jindal Steel Works (JSW) was on the verge of acquiring the Chennai-based facility when the agreement was called off last month.

We expect Ford India to bring 2,500 units of the Mustang Mach-E every year as fully-built units as that is the limit without full-blown homologation. Because it will be a CBU import, the Mustang Mach-E will be virtually identical to the model models in other countries. Assembly of the crossover electric SUV is done in Mexico and China.

The Mustang Mach-E is offered in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations and with the option of two battery packs. The entry-level RWD Mach-E gets a 72kWh battery that produces 269PS and 430Nm of torque and returns a range of 470km. The long-distance variant uses a 91kWh battery with 294PS and 430Nm and has a claimed range of 600km.

Meanwhile, the AWD version with the 91kWh produces 351PS and 580Nm of torque and has a range of 548km. The top-spec GT AWD variant gets the 91kWh battery with 487PS and 860Nm of torque and returns a range of 489km. The GT variant is capable of doing 0 to 100kmph in under 4 seconds.

We're still unsure as to which of these models will come to India but we don't expect the Mustang Mach-E to be affordably priced as it is in the USA. The figure we're looking at is closer to Rs 1 crore if not more.
