Electric Land Rover Defender to be showcased at Geneva
Land Rover, a few days back announced that they will unveil the Range Rover Evoque with a 9-speed auto transmission at the Geneva 2013 show. Now, the company has also confirmed that they will be showcasing seven Defenders with an electric powertrain at the same show. The diesel motor from the Defender is replaced by a 94PS electric motor, mated to a single-speed transmission. The electric motor is powered by a 27kWh capacity 300-volt Li-ion battery and has a claimed range of 80kms. A 7kW quick charger ensures a four-hour recharge for the battery pack.
The electric powertrain doesn't mean the Defender's legendary off-roading capabilities are compromised. It can still wade through 800mm of water and pull a 12-tonne road train up a 13 per cent incline. As of now, there are no plans of putting it for regular production but the company will be sending out these prototypes for trials in real-world conditions.
