Dacia Bigster Concept SUV unveiled, previews new range-topping SUV

Dacia, the Romanian budget brand of Groupe Renault, has unveiled the Dacia Bigster Concept. The SUV concept previews a new range-topping offering from the brand, sitting above the Duster in its line-up. Although the Dacia brand hasn't been seen in the country, the Duster, Lodgy and the Logan were all derived from Renault's budget arm but sold under the Renault brand in India.

As for the Bigster, the new SUV is 4.6m long which puts it up against cars like the Tata Harrier and the MG Hector. In terms of styling, there are distinct influences of the Duster here. The flat panels, upright shape have become a Dacia design staple. Further adding to this SUV's hardy premise is the flat face with the simple low-slung airdam merging with a chiselled bonnet. The large glass area and chunky wheel arches (made from recycled plastics) are another design trait that seems influenced by the Duster. The squared-off rear with the chamfered boot lid and the big skidplates round-off this theme. Some notable new elements are the new Dacia logo and the full-width lighting with the arrowhead motifs.

The interiors of the Dacia Bigster should be quite spacious, being based on Renault-Nissan's CMF-B architecture. The dash design should follow the simple, functional layout from other Dacia models but with more features and tech. With the size of the Bigster, a five-seater and a seven-seater option seem possible. Dacia has confirmed that the Bigster will get LPG/CNG and hybrid versions, along with the usual crop of petrol and diesel engines.

There is no word yet on the Dacia Bigster Concept's prospects for the Indian market. But with its positioning and value proposition, the SUV could be a great fit for the Renault-Nissan alliance in the hotly contested C-SUV segment, going up against cars like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Harrier and the MG Hector. A seven-seater would also compete with the likes of the Hector Plus, the upcoming Tata Safari and the Hyundai Creta 7-seater.
