BMW Motorrad India's major models' trim differences explained

The BMW Motorrad India price list came out a few days ago, and it looks golden compared to the prices that the same model was being sold when the German motorcycle manufacturer was being represented by its importers. But the price list looked a little mysterious with some of the models being sold in two or three trim levels called Standard, Dynamic+ and Pro. So we decided to dive in and find out what the names really mean for at least the four models that we believe will see a lot of movement for the brand.

The Standard models are pretty well equipped and, in most of the cases, the Dynamic+ model adds a lot of the electronics that the BMW machines are famous for today. This also means a notable price increment, however. With a few exceptions, the Pro model is usually within Rs 50,000 of the Dynamic+ adding a small sprinkle of garnish on top of the abundance that is the Dynamic+ model.

BMW R 1200 GS

This is the iconic BMW motorcycle. Indeed, it was the only one until the S 1000 RR arrived and made itself one of the most desirable sports motorcycles of all, and the other BMW Motorrad icon. The current model features a counterbalanced 125PS/125Nm air/liquid-cooled 1,170cc boxer four. The motorcycle weighs 244kg (kerb weight). The seat height is adjustable 850mm and 870mm.

It comes in three models. The basic model is called the Standard and this is priced at Rs 15.90 lakh, ex-Delhi. Above this is the Rs 19 lakh Dynamic+ which adds LED headlights, electronic suspension adjustment, riding modes, cornering ABS (ABS Pro in BMW speak), quickshifter, cruise control and luggage. The top model is the Rs 19.50 lakh Pro, which further adds tyre-pressure control, heated grips, a knuckle guard and a chrome exhaust. You can further order spoked wheels, off-road tyres, sport suspension, suspension-lowering kits and more from the accessory catalogue.

BMW R 1200 GS Adventure

The R 1200 GS Adventure is, visually, the motorcycle that pops into your head when you think GS. However, just like what we found when we tested the Ducati Multistrada 1200S and the Multistrada Enduro back to back, should you buy one is a harder question than you think.

The GSA, as it is popularly called, is powered by the same 125PS/125Nm air/liquid-cooled 1,170cc boxer twin as the normal GS. It gets a 30-litre tank, spoke wheels with tubeless tyres, a 19-inch front wheel and even higher seat height – 890mn and 910mm! It also weighs 16kg more (kerb). The prices for its three trims - Standard, Dynamic+ and Pro - sit roughly Rs 1.6 lakh above the GS, but let's look in detail.

The Standard is priced at Rs 17.50 lakh. An additional Rs 3.4 lakh brings the Dynamic+ which adds LED headlights, electronic suspension adjustment, adjustable riding modes, quickshifter, cruise control and the metal cage for the hard panniers. Another Rs 50,000 or Rs 21.40 lakh (ex-Delhi) adds heated grips and tyre-pressure control.

BMW S 1000 RR

The iconic sportsbike is the BMW Motorrad flagship, and it remains the bike to beat in the market as hard-core performance goes. The bike is powered by a 199PS/113Nm 999cc inline-four. It weighs 208kg, ready to ride.

In India, the motorcycle comes as the Rs 18.90 lakh Standard (ex-Delhi) while the Pro trim is priced at Rs 21.40 lakh, Rs 2.5 lakh higher. The base model is already well equipped, but the Pro adds an autoblipper, heated grips, adjustable riding modes and cornering ABS. The Pro model also gets DDC, BMW's semi-active suspension system.

BMW S 1000 XR

The BMW S 1000 XR is the German uber sport tourer with an inline-4 that makes 165PS and 114Nm from its 999cc engine. It weighs 228kg, ready to ride, and it gets a 20-litre tank and 17-inch road tyres. Seat height is 840mm, which is the same as the Kawasaki Versys 650, approximately.

In India, the S 1000 XR is available in Standard and Pro trim levels with the prices set at Rs 18.50 and Rs 21.50 lakh respectively. The Standard trim gets all the basics right including the slipper clutch, stability control and ABS. The Pro model's additional Rs 3 lakh adds the BMW autoblipper, adjustable riding modes, cruise control, semi-active electronically controlled suspension, heated grips, main stand, luggage and a low seat.
