The Indian vehicle sector had a historic rise in sales in September 2023, hitting a new record just before the festive season, a time of high demand for car makers. Despite a significant rise in SUV and utility vehicle sales, the compact car class maintained its dominance. Let's take a look at the top five best-selling automobiles in India in September.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno: 18,417 units

Maruti Suzuki's domination over the Indian automobile market continued in September, with the Baleno raking in the most sales and earning the top place. The premium hatchback sold 18,417 units in September of this year, a 5 percent decrease year on year. Maruti sold 19,369 Balenos over the same period last year.

Powering the Baleno is a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine producing a maximum power output of 90PS and 113Nm of torque. This engine can be coupled with a five-speed manual unit or an AMT gearbox. Prices for the Maruti Suzuki Baleno start from Rs 6.61 lakh and rise all the way up to Rs 9.88 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR: 16,250 units

The Baleno was followed by another Maruti, this time the WagonR, which had a monthly sales figure of 16,250. However, the tall-boy hatchback has declined by 19 percent year on year since the Indo-Japanese company sold 20,078 WagonR hatchbacks in September last year.

The K12 1.2-litre engine in the WagonR is the same as the one offered in the Baleno. This four-cylinder unit produces 90PS and 113Nm. It can be had either with a five-speed manual or an AMT. However, you get a CNG option with the 1.0-litre engine, which puts out 67PS and 89Nm. While in the CNG mode, the power output is 56PS and 82Nm. Prices for the Maruti Suzuki WagonR start from Rs 5.54 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 7.42 lakh.

Tata Nexon: 15,325 units

In September 2023, the Tata Nexon became the third best-selling car overall and the best-selling SUV. In September of this year, the subcompact crossover sold 15,325 units, representing a 6 percent increase year over year. Tata Motors just debuted a facelifted version of the Nexon in September, which might be the key cause for the increase in Nexon sales.

Powering the Nexon facelift is a 1.2-litre, inline three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 120PS and 170Nm of torque and 1.5-litre inline four-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit that generates 115PS and 260Nm of torque. Along with a six-speed manual and an AMT, the petrol motor now can be mated to a new a seven-speed DCT unit with shift-by-wire technology. Prices for the Nexon facelift start from Rs 8.10 lakh and extend all the way up to Rs 15.50 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza: 15,001 units

Nexon was followed by one of its main competitors, Maruti Brezza, which sold 15,544 units in September, compared to 15,445 units sold in the same month last year, resulting in a 3 percent YoY loss. Maruti Suzuki only provides the Brezza with a petrol engine, which is also available in CNG form. The Brezza facelift gets the new 1.5-litre K15C petrol motor. This motor produces 103PS and 136.8 Nm. Transmission options include a five-speed manual and the new six-speed torque converter automatic.

Powering the Brezza CNG is the K15C, Dual Jet, Dual VVT, 1.5-litre, inline-four, naturally aspirated, petrol hybrid engine paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. This engine makes 101PS at 6,000rpm and 137Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. In the CNG mode, the motor produces 88PS at 5,500rpm and 121.5Nm of torque at 4,200rpm.  Prices for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza start from Rs 8.29 lakh while a top variant model is priced at Rs 14.14 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki Swift: 14,703 units

Maruti Swift was sixth, with a monthly volume of 14,703 units sold in September. Maruti sold 11,988 units of the hatchback in the same month last year, resulting in a 23 percent YoY increase. Images of the fourth-generation Swift, which is set to make its global premiere later this month, have recently emerged on the Internet.

The Swift shares its powertrain with the Baleno, hence outputs are the exact same. Prices for the current Maruti Suzuki Swift start from Rs 6 lakh and rise up to Rs 9.03 lakh for a top variant.
