The new generation Suzuki Swift recently made its global debut, bringing in a modern design, slightly revamped interior, and additional features. While the details about its powertrain were scarce when unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, they have now come into light, revealing that the hatchback now gets a new three-cylinder engine. What is also important to note is that the fourth-gen Swift has been spied testing in India for the first time, suggesting the launch could take place soon.

Suzuki Swift: Engine and transmission

The crux of the all-new is the new Z12E series 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine as against the K-Series 1.2-litre, inline four-cylinder Dual Jet Dual VVT petrol unit. It is claimed to offer sufficient torque at low speeds, making it easy to handle around town, says Suzuki. Speaking of which, the Japan-spec Swift also gets a new and lighter CVT automatic transmission to provide better fuel efficiency. In fact, there is also a hybrid powertrain on offer linked to an all-wheel drive system, which features an electronic parking brake with auto-hold.

In comparison, the on-sale India-spec Maruti Suzuki Swift comes powered by a 1.2-litre, inline four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine that generates 90PS and 113Nm. This unit is paired with a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT transmission.

Suzuki Swift: Highlights

The recently spotted Swift test mule showed off its blind spot monitoring system, which means that the India-spec model may feature a handful of driver assistance functions. In terms of design, the upcoming Swift is likely to retain the same design and interior as the model available in the Japanese market. It is expected to feature LED lights, new seats, a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Smart Play Pro+, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Suzuki Connect, and analogue instrument cluster.

Maruti is likely to offer it with six airbags, cruise control, ABS with EBD, 360deg camera, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), three-point seat belts and reminders for all seats, ISOFIX anchor points, and more.

Suzuki Swift: Pricing

The new Maruti Suzuki Swift prices are expected to start from around Rs 6-6.40 lakh and go up to Rs 9.50 lakh. Upon launch, it will continue to rival the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.
