Toyota Land Cruiser FJ debuts at Japan Mobility Show 2025

At the Japan Mobility Show 2025, Toyota unveiled the Land Cruiser FJ, a prototype that brings the rugged DNA of the Land Cruiser family into a compact, lifestyle-oriented form. The new FJ blends traditional off-road toughness with modern design and everyday usability; a "Freedom & Joy" vehicle for a new generation of adventurers. Positioned as the "fourth family" in the Land Cruiser lineup alongside the 300, 250 and 70 Series, the FJ blends the spirit of the original 1950s Land Cruiser with a fresh, youthful attitude.

Exterior Design

The Land Cruiser FJ's design blends heritage with contemporary function. Its boxy, upright silhouette echoes the early Land Cruisers while emphasising cabin space and cargo versatility. The rectangular body with chamfered edges delivers a clean, purposeful stance, while flared fenders and muscular bumpers add a sense of strength and stability.

In a nod to both durability and personalisation, Toyota has fitted removable, segmented corner bumpers that can be replaced individually if damaged. This modular approach not only enhances repairability but also opens the door to a wide range of customization options, a growing trend in the adventure SUV space.

Interior Design & Safety

Inside, the FJ's cockpit is built for clarity and control. A horizontal instrument panel helps drivers instantly judge vehicle attitude on uneven ground, while consolidated switches and a well-placed shift knob promote intuitive operation.

The low-set cowl and beltline improve forward visibility, critical for off-road driving, and contribute to overall safety. Toyota's Safety Sense suite adds advanced driver assistance, including Pre-Collision Safety, helping drivers explore confidently both on and off the road.

Platform and Powertrain

Under the bodywork lies a body-on-frame chassis, not a crossover platform, confirming Toyota's intent for genuine off-road capability. The FJ prototype uses a 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine (around 163 PS and 246 Nm), paired with a 6-speed automatic and part-time 4WD. It's 2,580 mm wheelbase that is 270 mm shorter than the Land Cruiser 250, meaning better manoeuvrability and a tighter 5.5 m turning radius.

Off-Road Performance & Agility

True to the Land Cruiser legacy, the FJ maintains serious off-road capability despite its smaller footprint. Built on Toyota's refined IMV platform, it ensures strong ground clearance and approach angles. The wheel articulation matches the legendary 70 Series, while its shorter wheelbase (270 mm less than the 250 Series) and 5.5 m turning radius enhance manoeuvrability.

Reinforced bracing under the floor boosts rigidity and handling stability, and extensive off-road testing during development guarantees the FJ's reliability and durability.

 Market Outlook

The Land Cruiser FJ will launch in Japan by mid-2026, with other Asian and Latin American markets likely to follow. There's no confirmation yet for North America or Europe, but Toyota clearly aims the FJ at younger buyers seeking authenticity and adventure without the bulk or price of a full-size off-roader.

By shrinking the Land Cruiser into a compact form without sacrificing ruggedness, Toyota signals a shift in its SUV strategy, offering a true go-anywhere machine for the modern era. The FJ brings heritage, practicality, and customisability together in one charismatic package, proving that even in an electrifying world, the spirit of exploration still has four wheels and a Toyota badge.
