Toyota India records highest March sales in eight years
Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 15,001 wholesale units for March 2021. This is a 114 per cent jump over the 7,023 units sold in March 2020, just as the COVID19 lockdown was introduced, and is the highest sales for the month that Toyota has registered in the country in eight years. The Japanese firm also garnered a 7 per cent increase in sales over February 2021, when 14,075 units were sold.
Toyota's global partnership with Suzuki which gives it access to Maruti Suzuki's volume products in India has been the main driver for success. The Toyota Urban Cruiser and the Glanza have been the main drivers for this jump in sales, although the firm has recently updated its core higher-end models too. This came in the form of the recently updated Toyota Innova and the Toyota Fortuner facelift. The firm has also expanded the Fortuner line-up to offer the Fortuner Legender, a higher-end road-biased offering.
Naveen Soni, senior vice president at Toyota Kirloskar Motor said of this development said, "We have been able to sustain the growth momentum as we closed the last quarter registering a 73% growth in domestic sales, when compared to the sales in the corresponding period last year (Jan- Mar 2020). In fact, last month witnessed the highest ever domestic sales in the month of March since 2013, helping us clock 114% growth over wholesales compared to March 2020. Our sales performance in the last quarter proved to be better than the sales in the festive season of the third quarter (Oct- Dec 2021), clocking a growth of 42%."
