Mercedes CLA Electric breaks cover
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the all-new CLA Electric sedan for India, marking a significant shift in its entry-level portfolio. Bookings for the electric sedan will open on March 10, with prices set to be announced in April. The CLA Electric is expected to be priced between Rs 55 lakh and Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom).
- Bookings open on March 10
- 85 kWh battery pack with a range of 792 km
- Rear mounted motor making 272 PS
The India-bound CLA 250+ is powered by an 85 kWh battery pack built on an advanced 800-volt electrical system. Mercedes claims a WLTP-certified range of up to 792 km for this variant. The impressive range figure is attributed to a highly efficient drivetrain rated at 93 percent efficiency, combined with careful aerodynamic engineering and energy management.
Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing 272 PS. The sedan can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in a claimed 6.7 seconds. Interestingly, the CLA Electric uses a two-speed transmission, a setup seen in cars like the Porsche Taycan, instead of the single-speed unit commonly used in most EVs.
Fast-charging capability is another highlight. The CLA EV supports DC fast charging at up to 240 kW, and under ideal conditions, it can gain up to 400 km of range in just 20 minutes.
FeaturesIt comes with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch central touchscreen powered by Mercedes' new MB.OS operating system. The front passenger side features a decorative glass panel with illuminated star patterns that integrate with the ambient lighting system.
The sedan supports over-the-air updates and comes equipped with wireless phone charging and six 100W USB-C charging ports. The rear seats offer a practical 40:20:40 split-folding function. An AMG styling package adds a sportier steering wheel with multiple tactile controls.
DesignedVisually, the new CLA Electric carries a strong identity centred around Mercedes' three-pointed star. The motif appears in the headlights and tail-lamps, while the sealed front grille features 142 illuminated star elements. The bumper design is clean and optimised for airflow, with subtle air channels to improve aerodynamic performance.
In profile, the sedan retains a coupe-inspired silhouette, enhanced by flush door handles and 18-inch alloy wheels. A large panoramic glass roof with a heat-protective coating has been included to suit warmer climates like India.
The new model is 30 mm longer, 25Â mm wider and 25 mm taller than before, yet it achieves a low drag coefficient of 0.21 thanks to improved airflow management. At the rear, a full-width LED light bar connects the tail-lights.
Colour options will include Clear Blue, Cosmic Black, Polar White, Alpine Grey and Patagonia Red, with the latter two offered under the Manufaktur programme.
Safety credentialsSafety features include front, side and centre airbags, along with Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems that use camera and radar technology. Although the CLA Electric has not yet been evaluated under Bharat NCAP, it secured a full five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP in 2025.
