Mahindra trademarks several names for the upcoming 5-door Thar

Heading into 2024, Mahindra has lined up a couple of SUV launches but the most awaited one of the lot has to be the 5-door Thar. Despite its off-road capabilities, the current 3-door Thar is not a viable family car and Mahindra plans to address that issue with the next 5-door model. Mahindra appears to have settled on seven names for the upcoming car and the Thar Armada seems to be the most prominent of those trademarked names.

The Thar 5-door is envisioned as a more practical incarnation of the conventional Thar, offering to combine its toughness with more usefulness. Mahindra has gained trademarks for a variety of evocative names as part of its preparations, including Thar, Armada, Cult, Rex, Savannah, Roxx, Gladius, and Centurion.

For those who are unfamiliar, Mahindra launched the Armada, a 4-door SUV with a 5-door configuration, in the 1990s. The brand is quite likely to resuscitate this legendary moniker, creating excitement among the off-roading community. The Armada, based on the Jeep, was manufactured in India by Mahindra from 1993 to 2001.

The Thar 5-door will be more than simply a longer version of the Thar 3-door. It will be distinguished by updated exterior components. Inside, spy images have revealed that it will sport a bigger touchscreen infotainment system as well as a sunroof. It should retain the existing Thar engine options, although with a greater power output.

The five-door Thar is expected to come equipped with a range of standard safety features, including six airbags, electronic stability program, hill hold and descent control, ABS with EBD, brake assist, TPMS, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, three-point seat belts, and seatbelt reminders for all seats, among other features. The automaker may also offer distinctive features with the five-door version.

The new five-door Thar could start from Rs 12-14 lakh and go up to Rs 17-19 lakh. Currently, the three-door Thar prices range between Rs 10.98 lakh and Rs 16.94 lakh (both ex-showroom). On the other hand, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is priced between Rs 12.74 lakh and Rs 15.05 lakh (ex-showroom). We expect Mahindra to launch the new five-door Thar sometime in the latter half of next year.
