Made in India Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara flagged off
The made in India Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara has been flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Hansalpur, Gujarat. Maruti Suzuki's first made in India electric SUV- e-Vitara will be exported to over 100 countries and this marks a major milestone for India as it gears up to become a global hub for clean energy manufacturing and sustainable green mobility.
While addressing the gathering, Toshiro Suzuki, , Representative Director and President at Suzuki Motor Corporation said, "This Gujarat facility, serving customers across India and global markets will shortly become one of the world's largest automobile manufacturing hubs, with a planned capacity of 1 million units." He further added, "We chose this facility to manufacture the e-VITARA, our first BEV and make it as global production hub for this model. We will export this "Made-in-India BEV" to over 100 countries, including Japan and Europe."
He also stated that another milestone of the company will be the production of India's first lithium-ion battery and cell with electrode level localisation which are used in hybrid vehicles. And these vehicles are being manufactured at the Toshiba Denso Suzuki plant, with only raw material and some semi-conductor parts coming from Japan.
The Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara will be manufactured at the Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, which is a part of the 2.6 million annual production capacity across the company's four plants in India. In the FY25, the company reported an export of 3.2 lakh vehicles and sold over 19 lakh units in the country. And with the launch of the e-Vitara, India has officially become Suzuki's manufacturing hub for electric vehicles.
Toshiro said, "Suzuki will invest over 70 thousand crore rupees in India, over the next 5 to 6 years. Honorable Prime Minister, Suzuki has proudly partnered in India's mobility journey for over four decades."
And he added, "We will use a multi-powertrain strategy including Electric, Strong Hybrid, ethanol flex fuel, and compressed biogas, to achieve carbon neutrality and climate change goals."
The company is yet to reveal range details of the e-Vitara, but during the Auto Expo 2025, the company showcased the electric SUV with two battery pack options- 49 kWh and 69 kWh. We can expect a range of over 500 km from the larger battery pack.
When it comes to features, the e-SUV is likely to be loaded to the gills with features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-screen setup comprising the infotainment and instrument cluster, a two-spoke multifunctional steering wheel, vertically stacked AC vents, drive modes, wireless charging, rotary knob on the centre console, and hill descent control to name a few. The safety suite is expected to have seven-airbags, Level-2 ADAS, a reverse camera, and ABS to name a few.
The company has also announced a dedicated charging app for its customers, about 1,500 service centres dedicated to electric vehicles in over 1000 cities. And setting up fast chargers at dealership touchpoints in major 1,000 cities.
