Jaguar C-X17 concept crossover named F-Pace, goes on sale in 2016

Jaguar have just announced that they will bring the highly acclaimed C-X17 concept crossover into production, naming it the F-Pace. The sports crossover concept that first made its debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show is expected to hit showrooms in 2016.

Speaking in Detroit, Andy Goss, Jaguar Land-Rover Global Sales Director said, "The F-Pace has now begun its engineering and development testing programme ahead of the new model going on sale in 2016."

Jaguar claim that exceedingly high demands from global markets inspired them to take the concept to production. This is an entirely new direction for the company who to date have never ventured beyond making sedans and sportscars. However, given the global demand for crossovers, the F-Pace should generate a highly sustainable business model for Jaguar in the future. The new crossover will be manufactured at a new lightweight technology facility coming up at Solihull which will generate some 1300 new jobs.

Headlining the F-Pace will be a new intelligent all-aluminium architecture showcased in the concept. This new architecture will be modular and scalable which means we will see several more crossovers and sedans in the near future aimed at various segments. This architecture is claimed to be lighter yet stiffer and more innovative than anything Jaguar have attempted before.

Powering the F-Pace will undoubtedly be a range of engines but it's very likely that the new 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine called the Ingenium will be one of the main powerplants. A four-cylinder diesel powertrain will also be part of the package but specifications haven't been floated out on either engine  yet.

The F-Pace will also get a new intelligent all-wheel drive system called the All-Surface Progress Control technology. This system will distribute torque between the front and rear wheels depending on the situation and need. Principal motive force will however be delivered to the rear wheels which makes this a fairly unique proposition in the crossover segment. In addition, the F-Pace will get torque vectoring to improve dynamics and even off-road ability although details are yet to be revealed about just how good this crossover will be away from tarmac. Whether Range-Rover has provided some of the off-road tech for this vehicle or if it's going to be purely road-biased, is yet to be seen. However, what we do know is that the F-Pace will go up against the Porsche Macan which only means the package will be competitive in every respect.

Gauging from what was seen on the concept, the interiors will be sophisticated and fairly upmarket. Jaguar claim that the interior design will be centred around the driver, and we presume several of the cues seen on the concept may even make it to production. Range-Rover at least hasn't disappointed in this regard - the Evoque and even the new Range-Rover adopted most of the sensational inputs we saw on the concepts into production. Certain details like the layout of the dashboard, the premium quality materials and some state of the art features may see the light of day then.

Andy Goss, further said, "In 2015 we will celebrate Jaguar's 80th year. We have started it by announcing our first performance crossover which we consider to be the ultimate practical sportscar - a car that builds on the marque's founding ideals of Grace, Pace and Space to become one of the most innovative Jaguars we've ever developed."

Jaguar's future continues to look bright and prosperous which also means owners Tata Motors will have a lot to cheer about in the coming years.
