Hyundai Custo to be unveiled in China by the end of August
The Hyundai Custo looks set to make its world debut towards the end of August after Hyundai revealed a few images of its latest MPV. The Hyundai Custo is a big MPV that borrows design and aesthetic characteristics from Hyundai's existing SUV lineup.
Primarily made only for the Asian markets, Custo's first destination will be China before it makes its way to the rest of Asia. Initially, Hyundai will only restrict the Custo as a petrol-only offering and customers will have a choice of two engines and two automatic transmissions.
From a design, perspective the Custo is an extremely attractive vehicle. It has the same wing-like shape as the Tucson, as well as matching headlamps and the 'parametric jewel' grille design, which houses the LED daytime running lights that are disguised as chrome decorations for the massive grille. The bottom part of the doors have a textured surface on the sides, and there are thin LED taillights joined by an LED light bar at the back. The rear doors are movable and have a fake skid plate on both bumpers.
The Hyundai Custo has a length of 4.95 metres, a width of 1.85 metres, and a height of 1.73 metres, with a wheelbase of 3,006 millimetres. While it does look pretty huge, it isn't as big as its Korean cousin, the Kia Carnival which is a more luxurious MPV.
The Hyundai Custo will only be available only as a front-wheel drive. The engine range kicks off with a 1.5-litre T-GDI turbo-petrol engine with 172PS, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic) and a bigger 2.0-litre T-GDI turbo-petrol engine with 239PS and 353 NM of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic.
On the inside, the Hyundai Custo is based on a minimalistic design. A thin digital instrument display and a portrait-oriented, 10.4-inch touchscreen liven up the basic dashboard arrangement. The steering wheel is identical to that of the Hyundai Creta, and the MPV also has a twin-sunroof configuration.
Ambient lighting, leather upholstery, seats with ventilation and massage functions, entertainment screens for second-row passengers, multi-zone climate control, powered sliding rear doors, 360-degree cameras, keyless entry and start, and even advanced driver assistance systems are expected to be included in the Hyundai Custo.
It will be available in China in seven- and eight-seat configurations, as well as a six-seat variant that replaces the second-row bench with a pair of captain chairs.
There is no word as to when India or the other Asian countries can expect this MPV but as the segment grows popular, the Custo could be expected to travel around the continent very soon.
