Honda Cars India expected to discontinue its diesel powered cars soon

Due to increasing pollution standards, Honda Cars India may stop selling diesel-powered vehicles in India. Real Time Driving Emissions (RDE), which will become mandatory in India starting in 2023, is said to be the driving force behind Honda's decision to stop making diesel-powered vehicles.

The City sedan, the WR-V crossover, and the Amaze compact sedan are the three diesel vehicles that Honda currently offers for sale in India. The same 1.5 litres, all-aluminium, i-DTEC turbo diesel engine, with outputs of 98.6 Bhp and 200 Nm, is used in all three vehicles. This diesel engine is produced in the automaker's Tapukara facility in Rajasthan and was especially designed for the Indian market.

Honda Cars India, which is almost ready to roll out its first luxury SUV to compete with models from Hyundai, Maruti, and Tata Motors, is trying to expand its lineup of hybrid cars even as it completes its national electric vehicle plan.

Takuya Tsumura, president & CEO of Honda Cars India said "We are now not thinking too much about diesel. It's very hard to clear RDE with the diesel. Even in Europe, most of the brands could not continue with diesel."

Globally, the Honda HR-V has undergone a complete generation shift, and an upscale SUV version is anticipated for India. Here, variants with front-wheel and all-wheel drive might be introduced. However, the HR-V will only be available in petrol, which would reduce its attractiveness in the SUV sector where consumers prefer diesel.
