BMW recalls over 4 lakh R 1200 GS and R 1250 GS bikes to correct cardan shaft issue

BMW Motorrad has issued a recall for the R 1200 GS and R 1250 GS bikes made between 2013 and 2021 so that a ventilation valve may be retrofitted to the cardan shaft. The recall affects a total of 440,000 motorcycles made between 2013 and 2021.

BMW is recalling the aforementioned bikes due to a potential issue with cardan shaft damage, which might cause a loss of drive.

According to BMW Motorrad, the R 1200 RT and R 1250 RT has also been affected by the defects since 2013, but the issue is exaggerated in the GS models due to the bike's design, specifically the angle at which the swingarm kinks between the cardan tunnel and the rear axle gearbox and the longer suspension travel on the GS models compared to the RT models.

BMW will make a small hole at the cross joint in the back of the motorcycle and put a valve there to fix the problem. With the help of this valve, the cardan tunnel will be able to expel air and moisture without any outside air entering.

BMW will of course provide this adjustment at no cost, and Motorrad advises against making any urgent appointments with your local dealer to address the issue right away. Instead, they advise waiting until your next planned service session.

BMW has known about the problem for some time, and as of October 2021, all freshly constructed R 1200 GS and R 1250 GS motorcycles are equipped with a ventilation hole.
