Back in 2005 when the Swift was launched we knew the seeds for multiple variants based on that platform had already been sown. It might not seem the case but allow me to remind you that the SX4 is based on the Swift platform (stretched obviously) while the upcoming Splash too will share the same underpinnings (albiet shrunk slightly). Back then what we were also sure of was that the Swift would eventually underpin an Esteem replacement (after all for how much longer could the Esteem be flogged?) and that’s finally here - in the shape of the unique-to-India Swift DZire.

Work on redesigning the Swift as a 3-box sedan started right since the launch of the Swift hatch and involved a number of Indian engineers. In the wake of numerous rough sketches, some that I found appealing on seeing them at a product presentation, the current design was selected after a lot of brainstorming between Maruti Suzuki and the parent company in Japan. In the sketch the boot looks similar to that of a Bangle designed BMW, perhaps because one of the principal designers, Pankaj Dhamane is a Bangle admirer. Similar to the 5-series, the boot has two distinct parts to it. Two sharp shoulder lines accentuate the high deck boot lid, lending it a distinct character that stands out from the other lines. This is a characteristic Bangle touch, one that evoked derision as well as praise from consumers, enthusiasts and the industry when BMW first introduced the design line. On the DZire however the boot simply fails to accentuate (or belnd with) the sportiness of the front end, which receives some moderate style elements such as the chrome strips running across the grille. What was an otherwise stylish and contemporary car looks out of sorts with the boot strapped on; especially since we’re so used to the cute and catchy Swift lines.

Severely criticised for lack of storage space, the Swift DZire certainly addresses that issue with its huge 440-litre boot. To accommodate the boot the entire structure of the Swift from the B-pillar onwards was redesigned. Though it is not easy to discern the difference, the rear doors are completely new, merging into the new C-pillar to get some sort of flow going. Pankaj also said that with the sedan they’ve addressed one of the design shortcomings of the hatch which was the thick C-pillar that obstructed vision and created a big blind spot.
